Upgrading Ubuntu 12.10 - Quantal Quetzal and Review

Its interesting to find yet another upgrade and a new release from Ubuntu team. And this time it is versioned as 12.10 also called "Quantal Quetzal"

So here is the step by step sequence how you can upgrade your existing Ubuntu OS to the new 12.10.

But why an upgrade?
The new Ubuntu promises a new Linux kernel, which is more optimized interms of performance. For example my home laptop is an Intel SOLO processor, which lacks performance. The only advantage I get is its long battery charge. So the overall GUI is much more fluid, and much more optimized Linux Kernel, hence I badly need such an upgrade.

Please find the Update Manager as shown below:

Once you open it, if there are no current distribution upgrades, you can see it shows there is a new upgrade/release available. You can choose "Upgrade" option as shown below:

Here you can choose to remove the old and obsolete apps which are no longer required, or been replaced by newer and better alternatives.

After a reboot with the new Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal:

Help:
For more details and to learn the GUI (in general about Ubuntu Unity interface, and few GUI changes specific to Ubuntu 12.10), kindly visit the generic "Help" app found in the Accessories category/type as shown below.

Here is the Kernel information of Ubuntu 12.10. As you can see this initial version packs with Linux Kernel 3.5.x. This is almost the new Linux Kernel followed recently by 3.6.x series of releases. This Kernel found to be extremely smooth and stable, and hence users will notice the difference of this new Ubuntu in their laptops/PCs which are quite old, and lacks resources/capacity almost similar to my home laptop, which is just an old Intel SOLO processor Acer Aspire slim laptop.

There are some new wallpapers and themes included in this version.

Here are the versions of Firefox Browser and Thunderbird Email apps which are initially bundled with Ubuntu 12.10:

Here is the performance analysis of the same. Compared to previous versions, the Ubuntu 12.10 is more smooth, more fluid and rich GUI experience.

I hope you found this article useful, kindly do post your suggestions, comments and experiences/reviews.

Linux, Kernel programming and Systems Software Classes

You can now join classes on Networking, Linux, Systems software, etc with live demo training sessions. You can learn via distance learning platform. I teach my students in old fashioned way the "Guru-Shishya" model. And I believe this is how the education should be provided with no strings attached and boundaries. If you have some prior experience and exposure in the subject, I cover more advance topics, skip the basics, do research and practical sessions. Based on your interest you can choose a specific course (listed below). Students living in abroad: I teach via Google hangouts/Skype, email, etc (audio/video/text chat sessions). You can pay your fee via Paypal and enroll for the classes. Students living in India: I teach via Google hangouts/Skype, email, etc (audio/video/text chat sessions).
